Key findings

  1. 26%

Only 26% knew of a conflict resolution policy in their scheme

37% said their scheme had no such policy and another 37% did not know, which suggests many disputes are not handled the way a scheme's own policy sets out.

  2. Processing of final benefits causes the most disputes

It came ahead of expenses charged to the fund and the appointment of trustees. Lack of information, unremitted pension deductions and delayed payments were the leading causes.

  3. Members terminated by their employer face the most disputes

They were involved more often than any other group, ahead of retirees. Many are going through the benefits process for the first time and may not know how it works.

  4. 50%

Half say trustees hold ultimate responsibility for disputes

22.5% looked to the Retirement Benefits Authority instead. In our study, trustees played the biggest role in managing and resolving disputes.

  5. 52%

52% spend 1 to 6 hours a week dealing with disputes

Cases involving beneficiaries can take up to six months to resolve, although in ideal cases most member disputes are solved within a week.
